For You And Me, Love Is Not To Be

There are some people who enter our lives quietly, never realizing how deeply they have touched our hearts.

For Michael, it happened the first time he met her. There was nothing dramatic about the moment. No lightning bolt. No grand revelation. Just a simple conversation that somehow stayed with him long after it ended. As the weeks turned into months, he found himself looking forward to every opportunity to see her. A casual greeting could brighten his entire day. A few minutes of conversation could leave him smiling for hours afterward.

What she never knew was that every time he looked into her eyes, there were words trapped inside him that he could never quite bring himself to say.

I love you.

The words lived quietly within him, hidden behind friendly smiles and ordinary conversations. Sometimes he imagined what might happen if he finally spoke them aloud. In those private moments, he allowed himself to dream of a different future. A future where they walked through life together, shared holidays, built memories, and grew old side by side.

But dreams, he had learned, are not promises. Life has a way of drawing lines that the heart does not understand. Circumstances, timing, responsibilities, and realities often stand where love wishes to go. No matter how much he hoped otherwise, he knew there were obstacles neither of them could overcome. The more he thought about what could never be, the more dangerous his wishing became.

Hope slowly transformed into a quiet ache he carried everywhere. Still, he could not stop caring for her. Years might pass, seasons might change, and their lives might follow entirely different paths, yet she remained a permanent part of his thoughts. Sometimes she appeared unexpectedly in a memory. Other times a song on the radio or a familiar place would bring her instantly to mind. He often wondered what the future held for her, whether she found happiness, whether her dreams came true, and whether she ever thought of him at all.

Those questions never seemed to have answers. At night, when the world grew silent and sleep finally came, he often found himself in dreams where none of the barriers existed. In those dreams, they laughed together, held hands, and shared the kind of love he had always wanted but never possessed. For a few brief hours, the impossible felt real. Then morning would arrive, and reality would gently reclaim him.

Over time, Michael came to understand that not every love story is meant to become a relationship. Some exist only as lessons, memories, and reminders of what the heart is capable of feeling. It was a painful truth, yet there was also something beautiful hidden within it. Loving someone had changed him. It had taught him compassion, patience, and the bittersweet courage required to let go of things he could never have.

Even now, he carried a small piece of hope inside him, though he knew it was fragile. Perhaps hope itself was a broken promise, something people cling to because the alternative feels too empty. Yet despite everything, he could never quite release it. And so he continued forward, carrying both love and acceptance in equal measure, knowing that some dreams belong only to dreams. Though she would always occupy a special place in his heart, he finally understood the truth he had spent years trying to avoid.

For him and for her, love was simply not meant to be.
