Steve often found himself staring out the window long after the rest of the world had gone to sleep.
The quiet hours of the night had become both a comfort and a curse. They were the moments when his thoughts wandered most freely, and almost inevitably, they led him back to her. He had never expected to fall in love the way he had. It wasn't something he had planned for or gone looking for. Yet somehow, over time, she had become woven into his thoughts, his hopes, and the dreams he carried with him every day. Her smile could brighten even the darkest afternoon, and hearing her voice always seemed to leave him feeling lighter than before. The more he came to know her, the deeper his feelings grew, until one day he realized he was hopelessly and completely in love.
On clear evenings, Steve would sit beneath the stars and allow himself to imagine what life might look like if dreams could become reality. In those private moments, he pictured the two of them building a life together. He imagined sharing morning coffee, celebrating birthdays and anniversaries, taking long drives with no particular destination, and supporting one another through every challenge life might bring. He dreamed of growing old beside her, still laughing at the same jokes and still reaching for her hand after many years together.
One particular night, after thinking of her for hours, Steve drifted off to sleep. Almost immediately, he found himself standing in a beautiful place that seemed more vivid than any dream he had ever known. The sky was bright and blue, flowers bloomed everywhere, and a gentle breeze carried the scent of spring. As he looked around, he saw her walking toward him. Her smile was warm and familiar, and when she reached him, it felt as though they had been together forever.
They spent the day talking and laughing as they wandered through gardens and tree-lined paths. There was no uncertainty, no fear, and no unanswered questions. Everything felt right. As the dream unfolded, Steve realized they were not simply sharing a pleasant afternoon. They were sharing a life. He saw years pass before his eyes. He saw holidays spent together, family gatherings filled with laughter, and quiet evenings sitting side by side watching the sun disappear below the horizon. Every moment felt real, and every moment filled his heart with happiness.
Eventually they came to a large oak tree standing alone in a field of green. The sunlight filtered through the branches, casting golden patterns across the grass. Steve turned toward her and felt his heart pounding. Though it was only a dream, the emotions were as real as anything he had ever experienced. Slowly, he knelt before her. "I want to spend forever with you," he said. "I want to be your closest friend and the one you can always depend on. I want to share every part of life's journey with you.
"Will you marry me?"
Tears filled her eyes as she smiled. Then she nodded. The joy that rushed through him was beyond description. Taking her hands in his, Steve promised that he would love her, cherish her, and stand beside her through every season of life. He promised that with every breath he took, his love for her would remain steadfast and true. It felt like the beginning of a beautiful future, one filled with hope, devotion, and a lifetime of shared memories.
Then, as dreams often do, the world around him began to fade. The colors softened. The sunlight disappeared. The field, the tree, and even her smile slowly drifted away. Steve tried desperately to hold on to the moment, but it slipped through his fingers like sand. When he opened his eyes, he found himself lying in bed, staring at the ceiling in the darkness of the early morning hours. For several minutes he didn't move. The silence in the room felt almost overwhelming as reality settled over him. The woman he adored was not there. The proposal had never happened. The life they had shared existed only within the boundaries of a dream.
A sadness settled over him, but it was accompanied by something else as well. Despite the disappointment, he felt grateful for those few precious moments. For a little while, he had experienced what his heart longed for most. As dawn began to paint the horizon with the first hints of light, Steve rose from his bed and walked to the window. Looking toward the brightening sky, he thought about the woman who occupied so much of his heart. He knew some dreams never come true and some loves are never fully realized.
Yet he also knew that genuine love does not simply disappear because circumstances refuse to cooperate. Standing there in the quiet morning, Steve smiled softly. If he could have wished upon every star in the heavens, he would have spent every wish on her. He would have wished for a future together, for a lifetime of shared experiences, and for the chance to love her openly and completely. Whether that future would ever come to pass was something only time could answer. Until then, he carried the dream with him, treasuring it for what it was. And deep within his heart, where hope and love continued to reside side by side, he knew one thing with absolute certainty.
He would forever and ever love her.
