Just Wanna Be Normal

The rain had finally stopped, but Doris remained sitting outside the small tent she now called home. The evening air felt cool against her face as she wrapped her arms around herself and stared at the fading sunset. Most people seeing this would have seen another woman struggling to put her life back together. They would never have known how hard she was fighting simply to make it through another day.

There was a time when her life had looked very different. As a little girl, she had spent countless afternoons in her mother's kitchen, helping roll cookie dough while music played softly from an old radio. Her mother would laugh at her flour-covered face and tell her she could be anything she wanted when she grew up. Back then, the world seemed safe, and tomorrow always felt full of promise.

But somewhere along the way, life took a turn she never expected. What began as an escape from pain slowly became a prison. One pill became two. Two became many. Before she realized what was happening, addiction had wrapped itself around every part of her life. It stole her peace, her confidence, and years she could never get back. The hardest part was not the cravings or the withdrawals. It was the guilt that followed her everywhere she went.

Every night she thought about the people she loved. She thought about her mother, who never stopped answering the phone no matter how many times Doris had disappointed her. She thought about her father, whose voice still carried both concern and hope whenever they spoke. She thought about her brothers and sisters, who continued praying for her even when they didn't know what else to do. Most of all, she thought about her son.

There were nights when she would sit alone and stare at his photograph until tears blurred the image. She had missed birthdays, school events, and countless moments that should have belonged to them both. The weight of those memories often felt heavier than anything she had ever carried. More than once she wondered if she had fallen too far to ever find her way back.Yet despite everything, a small spark inside her refused to die.

Each morning she woke with the same prayer on her heart. She wasn't asking for wealth, fame, or success. She wasn't asking for an easy life. She simply wanted to be normal again. She wanted to wake up without fear. She wanted to look in the mirror and recognize the woman staring back at her. She wanted to spend time with her family without secretly battling the chains that addiction had wrapped around her soul. More than anything, she wanted to find peace.

One evening, after a particularly difficult day, Doris walked to a hill overlooking the town. The sky glowed with shades of gold, purple, and crimson as the sun slowly disappeared beyond the horizon. Standing there in the quiet, she felt something she had not felt in years. It wasn't happiness. It wasn't certainty. It was hope. For several minutes she simply stood there, watching the first stars appear overhead. Then she bowed her head and whispered a prayer. The words were not polished or rehearsed. They came straight from a weary heart that had finally run out of answers.

"Lord, I can't do this alone anymore."

The tears came freely as she spoke. She asked for strength to keep fighting. She asked for forgiveness for the mistakes she had made. She asked for one more chance to become the woman she knew she could be. As darkness settled around her, an unexpected calm slowly replaced the fear she had carried for so long. The road ahead would not be easy. Recovery never was. There would be difficult days, setbacks, temptations, and moments when she stumbled.

But for the first time, she understood that stumbling did not have to mean surrendering. Falling did not have to mean staying down. The next morning the challenges were still there waiting for her. Life had not magically transformed overnight, and the work ahead remained difficult. Yet something inside Doris had changed. She stood a little taller, prayed a little harder, and believed a little more.

With every step forward, supported by her family, her friends, and her faith in God, she moved closer to the life she longed for. It would take time, patience, and perseverance, but she finally believed that freedom was possible. And as she looked toward the future, she realized that being normal was never really about having a perfect life. It was about finding peace with herself, trusting in God's grace, and having the courage to keep moving forward one day at a time.

For the first time in many years, Doris believed she might actually get there.
